To engage the party to whom He was speaking in a way that they should have understood.

One such method was remez (Hebrew) or simply put ‘to hint or allude to’. Quite often the teacher or in this case Jesus, would allude to a certain passage of scripture by stating a phrase or small portion of a passage. This would force the hearer to search their minds for the context of that phrase into its location in scriptures. Brilliant! One such example is even on the lips of Jesus as He hung in the last moments of His life on the cross…

‘Eli Eli lama sabacthani’ …‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me’, Psalm 22:1.

Even in the moment before death Jesus soul was reminding His disciples once again, go to the passage…go to the passage, it will speak of things to come and give you hope. When we go to that passage we can see the whole crucifixion scene so clearly detailed that it opens not only our hearts but also our eyes to the amazing way that God fulfils His word to the letter.

For those of us that are called to the ministry of Worship through music, the use of such methods should not be ignored. Songwriters will often have an allusion or ‘remez’ to a theme that is to be structured within a small few sentences. Hymns, old and new, are able to employ a more thorough approach where whole passages are quoted or expounded. Contemporary worship songs do not often have the luxury of multiple stanzas of scriptural exposition and so the crafting of our worship is something that should be shaped, moulded and intentional creating a renewed thirst in the congregation to search out the truths ‘alluded’ to in the worship.

I firmly believe that this approach will have a profound effect on the writer, the hearer and the listener as the glimpses of God’s word will set our hearts on fire with revelation.

Ultimately, we need to be hearing from the voice of the Holy Spirit in our times of worship and in so doing the Living Word, Jesus....given, that is a no brainer. As the Chief conductor of our worship the Holy Spirit may use this very method to move the people in a certain direction by one simple phrase spoken into the heart of the worship leader or another in the team. This, not unlike the operation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, will require a step of faith and some holy boldness. Once that step is taken, however, the heart and purpose of worship can be accomplished...glorifying God and lives transformed.

I have no doubt in my heart that seeds were sown into many lives who heard the last words of Jesus on that day. That over the next few days they thought of the words of a dying man and went to the Psalms. Some 50 days later I hope that many spoke to Him again in repentance and faith and were counted among the thousands who worshiped their Messiah Jesus for the first time. The incarnate word of God, John Ch1.

What's in a word? Only the power of the creator of all that was, is and is to come...and that is no 'illusion'!

Adam

(Thanks to Chuck Cohen's amazing book 'The roots of our faith' for the inspiration behind this blog entry)

The problem with 'I will'.

In Isaiah 14 we read of the prophetic judgment on Babylon for their handling of the nation of Israel. When reading ‘behind the lines’ it becomes obvious that we step out of Isaiah’s imminent proclamation and into the Throne room of God and a message that is eternal in perspective and consequence, the fall of Lucifer.

Some scholars suggest that the reference to Satan in this passage is secondary to that of the king of Babylon…even if so, I see that it gives a clear picture of the attributes that Satan (Lucifer) allowed to build in his heart, ultimately determining his eternal fate.

The environment for this rebellion was, unfortunately, worship. Not so much the act but the object of it. The cause put simply…PRIDE! This passage reveals five steps up, each one closer to the ultimate goal, equality with God.

I will, I will, I will, I will, I will…the rest as they say, is history!

The sadness, such a lame word in this context, is that Lucifer was created with music and the anointing to worship in his very being (Ezekiel 28:13). When you take a minute to contemplate his downfall, how the Father’s heart must have been broken by this event.

By contrast, Jesus demonstrated the exact opposite to Lucifer’s pride…he humbled himself in ways that only eternity will unveil to us.

• From His place of glory before the worlds were formed He willingly presented Himself as the Lamb of God to be slain (Rev 13:8)
• From the age of twelve Jesus was aware that He was to be ‘about His Father’s business’ (Luke2:49), yielding to His Father’s will
• Teaching his disciples that He, Jesus, was constantly looking to do the Fathers will and what pleased Him (John 4:34, 6:39, 8:29)
• In Gethsemane, the place of crushing, His ‘obedience unto death’ displayed the ultimate sacrifice and display of obedience to His Father’s will (Luke 22:42)

Pride…Our will and worship are inextricably linked. Without yielded and humble hearts we will fall short of God’s glory and seek to promote ourselves.

On the other hand, as we humble ourselves and give all that we are to the One who is worthy of all worship our hearts will explode with the glory that we see in and through the Logos, the reason why…Jesus!

Adam

Stating the obvious!

We recently had the ‘delight’ of looking for a rental in Singapore. As it happens we have ended up in a funky renovated HDB in Tampines, very close to all the important things…food, shopping centres and transport. Singaporean town planning at it’s best.

Prior to that, however, we spent hours surfing the net and wading thru countless pages of rentals, finally narrowing it down and taking to the streets to find our new home. Agent after agent, apartment by apartment there was one factor to this house-hunting mission that was constant…agents who revelled in ‘stating the obvious’.

Now, before any real estate agents black mark this blog for life there is a positive twist to come so stay with me!
With each apartment my kids anticipation for what was to come could be seen on their faces. With the turn of the key to each new apartment my three children would look at my wife Johanna and I with the expectation of hearing the following ‘Now this is the front door, this is the kitchen, this is a bedroom, this is the toilet etc etc’.

I know, I know, they are just doing their job but after the third or fourth apartment I cheekily began to finish their sentences…naughty I know, but fun!

Now having settled into our new HDB, apparently the best street in Tampines according to taxi drivers, I had a few moments to reflect on the events of the previous weeks. Smiling contently to myself in my lazy boy chair with a hot cup of freshly brewed coffee, a new blog entry began to emerge…with, I think, a little conviction of the Holy Spirit.

So often we are guilty of going through the motions of telling God what we need, what we want and how we expect Him to serve it up to us…I confess even the other day as I knelt to pray about my ‘needs’ the thought struck me that to ‘state the obvious’ about God and who He is will never be wasted time, never fall short of truth and will always bring a fresh awareness of who God is and always will be…similarly in worship, to ‘state the obvious’ about God is an element of worship that is eternal in its perspective, but immediate in the strengthening of our faith.

To all Real estate agents, thanks for the inspiration.

Adam

the walk of faith...

This post is coming really late, simply because I got back from an awesome trip to Sydney for the Hillsong conference on the 13th of July, but just could not find the time to sit down and blog about it til now.

I had the privilege of travelling with 17 of my youth leaders and members of my church's music team as we roughed it out for a week, braved the Sydney winter, stayed in budget accommodations but soaked in the presence of the LORD for 4 days & nights. It was simply a glimpse of heaven for me, with more than 22,000 people representing more than 50 countries gathering for the sole purpose of worshiping our awesome God.

I remember one of things that I strongly felt during one of the evening worships was that this was what God desired. For HIS church to come together, people from different ethnicities, different denominations, different age groups, different cultures and different lands to worship in one voice. And in that 120 decibel worship environment, I could hear God whispering that BEEP was to do a similar work, of bringing His people from every tribe & tongue together in worship...

And so we continue on our journey of faith. I can't imagine why the churches in our nation and beyond can be bothered with the thoughts, dreams & visions of 5 guys, but by God's grace, a nation can be impacted through lives totally surrendered to HIS plans. I believe we just have to continue to (and I quote Pastor Edmund Chan's philosophy to ministry) "Dream Big, Start Small & Grow Deep". First, supporting the efforts of In-Deep, next serving the church through 'Just Worship'... then continue to produce and avail anointed songs from this nation to the rest of the Church...

the one united Church of Christ.
-kev

Living Stones

It has been a couple of weeks now since the BEEP team welcomed our second ‘official’ staff member, Mr Irving Koh. For those who know him, he needs no introduction. For those who don’t, you can see a window into his personality by listening to him fronting up our BEEP podcasts.

You’ll be mesmerised by his engaging wit, his charm, his zest for life…well you get the picture, he’s just a cool guy!
More importantly he loves Jesus and has been waiting patiently for such an opportunity as BEEP music to serve the body of Christ in Singapore and beyond.

Woohoo!

In writing this little letter of introduction several things occurred to me that could not remain unsaid…as is often the biblical way of things let me first begin with the natural, then with the spiritual.

The natural:

Since arriving in Singapore with my family over six months ago, the BEEP guys Irv, Merv, Gev, Kev and Jdub, have made our transition into the Singaporean lifestyle that much easier for my family and I (not to mention the various wives aswell). They even let me play in their band, so I became an appendage to a five fingered Starfish, what the?

None of what we have accomplished in the past months could have been achieved without the sacrifice of time and energy from this ‘band of brothers’.
Thanks guys!

The Spiritual

Since beginning this new venture that is Beep, we have come from the place of a bunch of people with a common heart and desire to a functional team that is seeing the amazing hand of God moulding, shaping and stretching these simple vessels, these living stones. The Apostle Peter speaks about this in his first Epistle, no longer individual bricks but living stones being aligned to the Chief Cornerstone, Jesus.

Are we there yet, do we have it all together? Nooo, but this hand or foot or ear, whatever part we are playing in the kingdom is on the way and we’re not looking back!

One thing I do ask you to keep in prayer is that Irving and I resist the temptation to have prata and kopi more than once a week at the little Indian coffee house behind the studio, the climb up the studio stairs seems to get harder with each visit…haha!

Adam

The true price of worship...everything!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 108px; height: 115px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1fuTu2-xuWs/SlccRAHru9I/AAAAAAAAADQ/YBBeTwTkaLw/s320/Graham.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356781360196074450" />
Recently, after having enjoyed a delicious, albeit expensive cup of coffee, I bumped into a Pastor from our church (in fact I literally bumped into his table and spilt his coffee into his lap). He kind of stands out in any Singaporean crowd due to his ginger locks and moustache, he was hard to miss. We had not yet met and after some introduction and pleasantries we got down to the business of discussing our testimonies.

As we spoke together of missions and of his direct work in the volatile province of Orissa, India, I was reminded of a father and his two sons who were martyred near that region, burned to death in there jeep by Hindu extremists on January 22nd, 1999. You may have seen the headlines as we did in Australia…such headlines as ‘Murder at midnight’ splashed across papers and newscasts alike.

The Staines family had been originally sent from several churches including ours in Brisbane…so the news spread quickly and came thru to our Pastor only several minutes before we were to begin our worship the following day.

As it happened I was leading worship that day. Our Pastor, with great anguish and yet triumphant joy made the announcement to the congregation that the Trumpet had sounded for Graham and his two boys, Timothy and Philip. They were now seeing their Saviour face to face.

Needless to say leading worship was difficult that Sunday morning, moments where words could not be uttered, eyes were filled with tears…and yet incredible hope filled our congregation. Though shocked and bewildered, we all caught a glimpse of eternity that day that I am sure was not be soon forgotten.

In simple terms what we did that day opened our eyes to another tangible dimension of Worship…the reality of life and death, of martyrdom for our Glorious King, what we have often read about became a part of our churches story.

As it happens I did not even know the family personally, but that didn’t diminish my response to the Lord that day. Faith, Love and importantly Hope were the ingredients of thanksgiving, of worship that Sunday morning. My eyes are filled with tears as I write not only for the Staines family, a wife and daughter left behind, but for the glory of the Lord, that the zeal for His house would consume us as we lay our lives, our hearts, our all before Him.

For Graham, Philip and Timothy the fire and zeal of God that consumed them, fueled the flames of hatred that brought them into His presence. An ironic twist of fate…never! Rather, a crown of righteousness as a reward for their ultimate act of worship, ushering them into the presence of Jesus, with arms open wide.

Though sad for those left behind, there is ultimately victory for the Kingdom of God and a testament to the powerful work of the Holy Spirit in this family’s life. Gladys, widow of Graham and their daughter Esther have been back in that very place for several years now continuing what they as a family had begun, all to the glory of God, in praise and worship of their King.

Adam

372A - home of the beep

we're flying without a net! beep has moved into our first official premises... officially! and HQ Beep is rarin' to go... to ikea for lamps, plants, etc... oh those stylish yet reasonably priced home decorations/ accessories... how you draw me like a moth to a flame ... like icarus to the sun ... like Adam to a freshly-fried donut ... A child may here the words ‘Daddy’s home’ and immediately race for the front door…at the very mention of his name. Or another might hear a name that strikes fear into their heart…someone in authority, a bully, a terrorist…it only took the mention of their name. Standing at the altar, as a man and a woman declare their love, their vows to one another… the very mention of each other’s name will melt their hearts.

Who is it that captures our heart more than any other, that takes our breath away even for a moment…at the very mention of their name. I have seen this revelation of love, of thanksgiving, these breath taking moments displayed more often than not at an event most of us attend at least once a week corporately, hopefully on a daily basis on our own…in Worship.

There are moments in worship, whether in a crowd of thousands or in the solitude of a place where I meet with the Lord on my own, where the very mention of His name can cause me to weep, to dance, to declare my love for my Saviour.
Remember that Jesus said ‘I am with you always…I will never leave you nor forsake you! At the very mention of His name, He is there!

Adam

Wait , listen, walk!

Just a few weeks ago now I was sitting at the Budget airport, Singapore. My family and I were heading off for a few fun filled days at a resort in KL equipped with waterslides and ‘buffet breakfast’. I of course, had only one objective in mind…fitness! Who am I trying to kid, I was there for the pastries, French toast and I hope Eggs Benedict (if you don’t know what it is, my wife has the recipe), oooohhhhhh.
While fantasizing about my ‘buffet’, I began to muse on a recent comment about Singaporean eating habits…
‘Singaporeans concern themselves with the meal that is in front of them, visitors to Singapore concern themselves with the meal they are yet to experience’.

Wait for The Holy Spirit…

Though it is important to plan for the future, we cannot always count on the future. Quite often, and I speak to myself, we are consumed with that thing, that experience, that whatever that we have not yet had. So too in our Christian walk, planning ahead, preparing for what we know is important and essential, but never let it be at the expense of what God is saying to us at a given moment.

Listen to the Holy Spirit…

In the book of Exodus ch 33/34 we can read the account of Moses meeting ‘face to face with the Lord as a man speaks to his friend’. He then pleads with the Lord to confirm that He is with Him and the people of Israel for the physical and spiritual journey ahead of them. The Lord commands Moses to meet Him on the mount the next day and as He places Moses in the cleft or crack of the mountain side, the presence of the Lord passes by as He declares His covenant with His people and their generations to come.
Moses could have begun his 7 steps to the Promised Land program or simply packed up his own family and headed off on his own considering the ‘stiffnecked’ and disobedient Israelites, even his own brother Aaron having failed in the face of pressure…but he did’nt. He waited on the Lord, he got alone with the Lord, he met with the Lord, face to face.

Then walk with and in the power of the Holy Spirit…

Moses and the people waited until the law had been given before they moved forward toward the Promised Land. Then they walked, led by the Presence of God, sustained by the Presence of God, obeying the commands of God (sometimes anyway). As the time when we commemorate Pentecost, the 50th day after the end of Passover, let the cry of our heart be as Moses…
‘Lord, if your presence is not with us, let us not move on from here’.

Wait on Him, listen to Him, walk with Him…

Adam

.......

...could u BE more dramatic....

An Aussie in Singapore

As I am the only Ang Mo on the BEEP music team, I felt the blog needed a little ‘aussie-fying’ (is that a word?) or to put a twist on the 90’s song that shall remain nameless, reflections of ‘an aussie-man in Singapore’.
Firstly a huge thanks to the Starfish boys…Irv, Merv, Kev, Gev and Jdub aka BEEP music team. I arrived in Singapore mid November ’08, my family arriving a couple of months later to begin this new chapter in our lives. I can’t thank you enough for helping to make this transition as easy as possible, thanks guys and wives!
Leaving behind family, friends and security (if that exists anymore) we arrived in Singapore. We dumped our bags, had a 5 minute tour of the condo I had rented then…straight to a food court of course.
I think we set some kind of record that nite with all eight of us piling into their Singtel lookalike red van. And away we went for some East coast culinary delites at Bedok food court.
Jdub and family kindly said ‘leave it to us’ and promptly set off, gesturing to hawkers and speaking with the distinctive singlish we've come to love. Our hearts raced as we awaited the feast that was soon to materialise. My wife and I had tantalised our three kids mental tastebuds with images of satay, popiah and chicken curry…this was the moment!
A very smug Jdub soon returned, his mission accomplished, there would be feasting tonite…and then it arrived. In retrospect I now understand why the lady who served us had a somewhat quizzical expression on her face as she placed several plates of Rojak and what I can only describe as the Tofu tower of terror before us.
Very eagerly we tore off pieces of each placing them in our mouths and waiting for the delicate flavours to invigorate our tastebuds like a kaleidoscope of taste sensations…let’s just say rotten shrimp sauce, a little like durian, must be an aquired taste over time…a long time!
Looking forward to sharing more with you from week to week, forgive my self-indulgence this time. More reflections and hopefully some ‘good food’ (minus shrimp sauce) from the word of God aswell.
Adam

jon chong album preview!

exciting news! jonathan chong's brand new album is gonna be heard on beepmusic!
The up-n-coming young singer/songwriter with the big voice and big heart has kindly consented to be our upcoming artist-of-the-month and has put up one of the songs from his soon-to-be-released album to be heard on our website! this means beepers will be among the first to preview this album.... ever ... in the world!
how about that....
-josh

beep=mc2

okok. will give it a shot... (copious intake of breath...) it goes something like this.

In the book of Ephesians , Paul tells us how to be a Christian, how to relate to the world through our relationship with Christ, how to “live in the LIGHT” (5:8-14) whilst in the midst of darkness.

He urges us to put on the NEW NATURE (4:20-24), to apply wisdom and care to our lives (5:15-17), and to put on the whole armour of God (6:10-17).

And although there is an abundance of practical specifics, detailing the appropriate behaviours for husbands and wives, children and parents, employees/employers, about dealing with anger, bitterness, lying, slander, etc etc, the main message to the church is not what to DO.

It is, in essence, what (and how) to BE.
Be Renewed in our minds, Be Mature in our faith, Be United as the One Body of Christ, the building built on Christ as the cornerstone.
Be in the world but separate, set apart for His use, Holy, and living to the praise of His glory.

We the dudes at BEEPmusic feel called to serve the body of Christ through the infusion of creative energy in worship and music and in so doing, want to hold fast to Paul’s "BE" message to the EPhesians.

BE-EP beep!

okok so its not einstein! but it does have a certain in-your-face-ness which carries the faintest whiff of anti-estab.
appropriate, considering what we're doing.
beep-on!

-josh

beEP...

ok...
too many people have been asking me, "what does beep mean? is it an acronym for something else?"

all i can say to that is, Josh explains it better than me...
so ask him! it's an answer worth waiting for...

meanwhile, i've been listening to the songs that beep has been receiving.. and i've been so blessed by some of these songs. i could not help but wonder about the situations or the circumstances from which these songs were born... what was happening in the songwriter's life when he/she crafted them... what was he/she thinking about? what was he/she rejoicing about? what was he/she struggling with? how did he/she come to that revelation?

i realize that we do not give that God-inspired tune/lyric enough justice sometimes just by arranging/recording/producing it. i realize that 'amazing grace' took on a different dimension when i read about john newton's life and how God shaped him, i understood faith a little better when i read about horatio spafford and the circumstances he was in when he penned 'it is well with my soul', fanny crosby's life story opened my eyes to the 'blessed assurance' we have in Christ.. even the past week spent with the audacious band helped me understand the stories, the context and the culture from which songs like 'bounce' and 'set my feet' came out of, and for all that i'm left amazed at this awesome God we serve...

this revelation has affirmed our initial plan for a regular podcast that the beep team was planning, where we can showcase some of these local songs, interview the songwriters, find out a bit more about their lives, their inspiration, have a little fun, muck around a bit and just give a shout out to the community that is beep...

what do you guys think? It just seems so impersonal… So if I referred to someone as a “colleague”, you’d know how I feel about that person! Haha…) to the beepmusic website today and told her to listen to the locally written and produced songs.

Her reaction surprised me… She downloaded and listened to “Beautiful World”, liked it so much that she put it on repeat (for the whole morning maybe?) and is considering using the song for her wedding! She wants to blog about “Beautiful World” and let all her friends know about it! How cool is that? SOMEBODY likes the song! Woohoo! And because SOMEBODY will tell SOMEONE ELSE, OTHERS will know about it…

And here’s my thought: For all the effort, time, blood, sweat and tears that went into producing “Beautiful World”, it is not the song that will make an impact. Songs don’t create the impact, people do! Songs don’t change the world (pardon the cliché), people do! People who contemplate on what was sung, or act on what they’ve heard, or propagate the values they’ve imbibed create that impact… They ignite the spark. That’s why James tells us to be ‘doers, not just hearers’ of the Word. It’s not enough just to understand what it means to be the ‘salt and light of the world’… We have to BE the salt and light of the world. And because SOMEBODY is the salt and light of the world, SOMEONE ELSE will be impacted, in turn OTHERS will be impacted too, resulting in MANY coming to know about the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Lastly, Fulham vs Man U (2-0), Spurs vs Chelsea (1-0), Liverpool vs Villa (5-0)… It’s a beautiful world.

Gev

Post-Loudfest

it was an extremely tiring 2 weeks for me. firstly, willie and i had to really rush to get the final mix of the generation band's worship album (lovesong) out to the printers' a week before loudfest. i also had to finish the tracking, editing & mixing of a couple of the songs so that Josh could master it before we put it up on beepmusic.com.sg for download.

but long story short, it was tiring (12 hrs sleep a week), it was stressful (now i've got pimples coming out of my scalp!), it was tumultous (with emotions on the brink of flaring up as we had to make changes to the website, the designs, the music video wall, the mixes, the details we will release to the masses etc. etc.) but it was ALL WORTH IT!!

in just 2 weeks, generation band's worship album is launched and selling well, beepmusic.com.sg is up and running, we are getting a steady stream of people signing up for beep's newsletter, we've got song submissions coming in, loudfest was an amazing success with more than 40 churches represented and over 800 people responding to various challenges and altar calls and liverpool beating real madrid 4-0, man utd 4-1 and aston villa 5-0. it's impossible to see God's hand in all these.

i'm really charged up for what God is gonna do to the spiritual climate of our nation and region as we cross denominational, cultural & generational barriers and openly share our God-inspired worship songs for His glory.

and i hope you are too.

kevin
BEEP music
www.beepmusic.com.sg

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
